JCE 1.5.8 will be release soon after a short beta / test period. Some of the changes and new features to expect are:

Administration Component

Most of the component has been 're-factorted' and rebuilt to better utilize the Joomla! 1.5 API in preparation for migration to Joomla! 1.6 and JCE 2.0
Some features have been renamed. Plugins, Plugin Extensions and Languages are now generally referred to as "Add-ons" and installed using the Add-ons Installer.
The Add-ons Installer includes some new methods to install and manage add-ons that resemble options available in Joomla! 1.6.
A Backup option has been added. The JCE Global Configuration, Groups and Plugins data can be backed up to xml or zip files. Backups can be restored from a local folder or using the Backup installer.
JCE Utilities parameters can now be edited from the JCE Control Panel (JCE Utilities needs to be installed and enabled)
Groups can now be restricted to the front-end, back-end or both environments.
Some options in the Group Manager have been re-organized. Plugins that do not have a button are now placed in an 'Extras' tab.
Installation of the component and editor has been imporved with better upgrade support.

Editor Plugin

TinyMCE has been updated to the latest version - 3.2.7
Various bugs have been fixed.
Support for PHP 5.3 added
File / Folder lists in Manager plugins are now paginated with options to show 10, 25, 50 or 100 files and folders. Default is 25.
The Help dialogs have been improved. The menu can now be collapsed to provide a bigger viewing area for the content.
  are now retained by default in UTF-8 mode.
Visual Control button toggles   character and block element markers
Paste from Word button has been removed. Word cleanup is automatically applied to relevant pasted content. Paste and Paste As Plain Text buttons are now optional (both on by default)
CTRL+Shift+Enter keyboard shortcut added to jump out of block elements to the next line at the root of the document. Experimental.
AdvLink plugin now includes Popup tab to easily create JCE Utilities popups.

JCE 1.5.8 will be available within the next few weeks.

Looking forward to any improvements to the Groups feature. I have found it to be a bit confusing because of the layout. Thanks!

It could be very useful to have an option to display total characters written (text only, no html) and also an option to limit the max length for text.

Regarding "•Visual Control button toggles character and block element markers" This is what I expected the Visual Control button to do in the old version. That button actually does nothing at all, at least in my specific install or my specific content. Is this note above supposed to mean that the update will fix the button so that it works, or, is it supposed to mean that the button will do something new in addition to whatever it was supposed to do before?

Thanks guys this is the best content editor for joomla, before this I was having trouble with some editors, they took too mcuh to load especially on Joomfish translation interface.
