Getting started using JCE can seem a bit daunting at first. On the surface it can seem like quite a complicated extension, with two required packages, plus multiple additional plugins and language packs, not to mention the fact that there is currently a seperate version of each for each version of Joomla!
In reality, its actually quite simple. Here's a quick rundown of what constitutes a typical JCE installation:
- The JCE Administration Component - com_jce_150.zip OR com_jce_111.zip
- The JCE Editor Plugin (or mambot for Joomla! 1.0.1x) - plg_jce_151.zip OR bot_jce_118.zip
Both are packaged as seperate zip files, and are available from the downloads section of this website in their corresponding categories. For the Administration Component
Always read the description provided on the download page as it may contain important information regarding version requirements or other notes.
Once both files are downloaded, installation happens in two stages using the Joomla! installer.
- Install the JCE Admin Component using the Joomla! Component installer (1.0.1x) or Joomla! Installer (1.5.x)
- Install the JCE Editor Plugin using the Joomla! Mambot installer (1.0.1x) or Joomla! Installer (1.5.x)
There is a full set of tutorials on this installation process, including manual installation instructions available here .
Once that process is complete, assign the JCE Editor as the default wysiwyg in the Joomla! Configuration. You may also wish to assign as the default editor for individual users.
If you using JCE 1.5.x, I recommend reading the JCE Groups tutorial
Once you are familiar with the editor, you may wish to install some of the additional plugins available Some of these plugins are only available to subscribers. You can read more about these subscription plugins here.
