In the Profiles Setup tab, set the Name, Description, State Ordering and which Area, Components, Usertypes and Users the profile is assigned to.

Enter the profile Name1, Description2, set the Enabled State3 and the Ordering4. The ordering can alse be edited in the Profiles List and determines the order in which the profiles are processed. A profile with an Ordering value of 1 will be processed first, then the profile with an ordering value of 2 and so on.

Restrictions

Select which Area1, Components2, Usertypes3 and / or Users4 the profile is assigned to. Any combination of restrictions can be selected.

  1. Area - Select Front-end (site front-end), Back-end (site Administration) or Front-end and Back-end. The profile will be used in this area only.
  2. Components - Check Select From List and select the components to restrict the profile to (CTRL+Click to select/deselect multiple items). Check All Components to allow all (default)
  3. Usertypes - Select the usertypes (CTRL+Click to select/deselect multiple items) to restrict the profile to. The individual using the editor will have to be in one of these user groups unless set in the Users list.
  4. Users - Click the Add User button to locate the users for this profile. A user in this list need not be in the usertypes selected in the Usertypes list but must have access to the Area.

Some useful examples:

  • Front-end editing : a profile for authors, editors and publishers only. This profile might include limited editing options.
    • Area - Front-end
    • Components - All Components
    • Usertypes - Author, Editor, Publisher
    • Users - Empty
  • Admin only : a profile for Administrators and Super Administrators
    • Area - Front-end and Back-end
    • Components - All Components
    • Usertypes - Administrator, Super Administrator
    • Users - Empty
  • Newsletter : a profile for a specific component such as a newletter component
    • Area - Front-end and Back-end
    • Components - Newsletter (if installed, select the newsletter components name)
    • Usertypes - Publisher, Administrator, Super Administrator 
    • Users - joseschmo - This user is actually of usertype Editor but is allowed access to this profile.
