Is there a solution for editors to fit images (both landscape and portrait) into pre-defined square thumbnail, not cropped and keeping the original ratio’s.
Resulting for landscape a white/transparent top and bottom, vice versa for portrait and not cropping the photos.

Assuming you are referring to thumbnails created when uploading, or using the Create Thumbnail dialog - currently thumbnails are created proportional to the original image using the given dimensions, ie: resized proportionally to fit within the "box" defined by the dimensions, or cropped to fit within the given dimensions.

So, if the dimensions are a square, and you have not enabled cropping for the thumbnails, then they will be proportinally resized to fit within that square box, but the thumbnails resulting dimensions will not be exactly square.
