but I wonder what the white space below the "Template Icon" is good for. Should there be something - some templates, some last used values?
If you have created templates and they are in the designated File Directory Path, or there are other supported file types in the folder - html, txt, md - then clicking the caret icon next to the Template Manager button should load a list of these files to click on and insert.
Just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean everybody isn't out to get you.
