Today, after updating to JCE 2.5.9 the upload of some images failed, as they would contain html code. Error message "upload failed: the file contains html code".

I tried to upload 4 jpg-files. All 4 were just before the upload-attempt adjusted in Adobe Photoshop CS5 (on Windows 7). Two succeeded and two failed.

After downgrading to JCE 2.5.8 the upload of those files was no problem.

I'll attach one successful (Sailor.jpg) and one failing image (Go_With_The_Flow.jpg).

Edit: Unfortunately, but more or less expected, the upload of the second, failing, image failed here too. But you can download it from the site on

The other failing image can be found there too:

I am also having the same issue; I tried to upload a JPG to Amazon S3 using that plugin, and I get the message

Upload Failed: The file contains HTML code.

I checked, the ACLs for the S3 bucket are correct.

This is the result of the HTML tag check that is done on some image files going a bit too deep, and perhaps getting confused by XML data or similar.

This is removed in 2.5.10 (which I am preparing to release now) as this check is only really necessary for an old XSS attack in IE < 7 - http://kestas.kuliukas.com/JavaScriptImage/

JCE 2.5.10 also adds an option remove EXIF data from images, which should clean images of any potential malicious code hidden in the data (not an issue if you trust your users!) as well as anonymising the image by removing identifying information such as GPS co-ordinates!

The Upload Failed: No data error only occurs when the uploaded file doesn't exist or is invalid.

Do you get the error when uploading another file type, such as png?

Do you get any errors uploading the same file with the Joomla Media Manager?

Hi
Media manager gives file too large to upload, and the file(s) are just 31k or so each.

I tried a 233k png, it got most of the way through the upload then gave the same 500 error that it was invalid.

I have attached one of the images.
