Hi Ryan,
Our client is upset that the "Search" (or Filter) feature of the file/image browser doesn't really work. Fresh example: there's a directory with about 1700 files named as hap1001.jpg, hap1002.jpg etc. and after a failed experiment with disabled upload overwrite there's now a bunch of hap..._copy.jpg files, and it's a royal pain to found these without a proper search feature.
I peeked into the code and figured that search only works if a file name is typed from its start, but that doesn't help at all here.
Is there a solid reason why the search feature is crippled that way? Can we hope for it to become a normal search?
Thanks

I have made improvements to the list filter in JCE Pro 2.6.16 Beta 3 - https://www.joomlacontenteditor.net/downloads/editor/item/jce-pro-2616-dev
Please note that the "Search" field is a filter of the currently displayed list, not a search of the folder or subfolders.

Just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean everybody isn't out to get you.
Brilliant, thank you very much!
Re the search/filter confusion, may I suggest showing a funnel icon instead of a magnifying glass, which is a de-facto standard for "Search".
Actually a proper search (with an ajax call) would be priceless here, as when the list is set to show "All" files, it is barely usable, I mean it lags like hell to scroll it up and and down, fully saturating one CPU core and ramping RAM usage up ~500MB (Firefox). Not sure if that's fixable, just ranting.
Thanks!

This is something I am looking into for JCE 2.7

I've just discovered that this functionality already exists!! although it currently only matches from the beginning of the file name. This will be improved in the next update.

especially for websites with a large amount of images.
Unfortunately this is the problem, especially when these images are stored in a lot of folders.
Searching files on the server using PHP is not like querying the database. To search recursively, each folder must be opened, and the entire contents (file names) of the folder read. When this is done on a lot of files in a lot of folders, it can take a very long time, and consume a lot of memory.
