The File Directory Path can take variables, like $usergroup, $username, eg:
images/$user
which would restrict a user with the username bob to the folder
images/bob

Just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean everybody isn't out to get you.
Hello, this is great news! I typically use email addresses for usernames. Will that work or does the @ symbol break the file system? Perhaps the system strips it out?
I find it easier for a user to remember their email vs a username. I need to do this for a site with many users though and hope it's possible somehow.
Thanks

Hey careful man, there's a beverage here!

This is fine, the @ is removed from the folder name, eg: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. becomes adminjoomla.org

Hi Ryan
I am confused. This is what you wrote:
Your advice is $usergroup but in the mentionned documentation (URL above) $usergroup can not be found???
Your advice is to use $username but you ar giving an example $user???
Thank you and kind regards
Chris

Yes, there is some discrepancy between the post above and the tutorial, but both variables are valid.
$usertype and $usergroup both refer to the group that the user is assigned to, eg: Author, Super User etc.
$user refers to the user's username.
