I created a subdomain: docs.vcrma.org as an alternative to having over 3 gigs (and growing) of pdf's on our site: testsite.vcrma.org. Our site maintainers will be using JCE Editor and would like to update articles and then to upload new PDF files linked in the articles to: docs.vcrma.org and not to the images folder within testsite.vcrma.org. To make it easy on the site maintainers, I would like them to be able to maintain the articles and upload files through the same JCE Editor/File Manager interface.
Is there a way to upload and access pdf's (documents) that are located outside of the site using the current Joomla site file system and JCE?
Thank you Ryan!

Unfortunately not. The JCE Filesystem API uses the Joomla Filesystem API, which does not allow access outside of the current site root (which is generally a good thing for security purposes).
It might be possible to do what you require with a dedicated JCE Filesystem plugin, which I will investigate over the weekend.
Just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean everybody isn't out to get you.
Any luck locating a plugin over the weekend?
It's not a case of locating one, but building one, which I am in the process of doing.
One snag that I am still to investigate, involves open_basedir - http://php.net/manual/en/ini.core.php#ini.open-basedir - which might restrict access to the files in the subdomain if it is located in a separate server user account to the one attempting to access it.

Wow Ryan, you're amazing! Your support is unparalleled. Thank you for your effort.
Please send me a login to both sites so I can test the new plugin on your site - https://www.joomlacontenteditor.net/contact/site-login

Thanks Ryan the File Manager works absolutely perfect. Your plugin is amazing. I have one question - Regarding the Insert/Edit Link tool, I can't figure out how to configure the Parameters so I can use it like the Insert/Edit File tool (File Manger).
The Insert/Edit File tool works great but the interface is crowded and the file windows are cramped so I prefer to use the Insert/Edit Link tool. I'd like it to connect to the docs.vcrma.org folder just like the File Manager.
Thank you so much for all your help!

Thanks Ryan,
Everything has been working out great. No bugs or glitches so far. Pretty awesome plugin.
I really appreciate your help with this.

Thanks again Ryan. I have one more question-
The current link hierarchy is taking my users to the entire: docs.vcrma.org directory where they have to navigate to the pdf folder and then to their division folder, etc.
How can I limit them to just the pdf folder? I've tried using various paths without success. When I attempt to restrict the path to the pdf folder the File Browser window just shows a generic Home directory with no other folders shown. I've modified it any number of times without success- I always get the empty Home directory.
Thank you-

Thank you Mr. Deemer, you're awesome! The folder you pointed to was actually the wrong PDF folder and empty. But with a few modifications, I was able to point to the correct folder and everything works great.
Thanks for everything
