I've downloaded and installed JCE Editor and JCEMediabox with a hope of better article editing with photo positioning, and creating a a photo gallery on a single page.
Moving on to the 'tutorials' however has drawn a blank with me. It all seems very complicated and much gobbledygook about the next steps. I thought the idea was to make it easier but it appears that you need to know 'unknowables' for the next steps.
Mainly I wanted a simple gallery on a page but cant see how this is done.
+ I have JCEeditor selected as my editor but can see no useful clues as to what to do next with locating photos apart from left middle or right leaving huge gaps in the accompanying text a bit like in MSWord. Is there no wysywig for all this?

After installing JCE Pro over JCE Core, you need to update the Editor Profiles with the Pro buttons you want to use.

Just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean everybody isn't out to get you.
Thanks for the responses. Something is still missing. I dont have Image Manager Extended. Should it be included? Is it a separate plugin? I tried but cant install from the zip download package "Can't find Joomla XML setup file" error. Not even sure I am seeing the same JCE Editor. Default editor seems to be JCE anyway.
Just to get a series of resized photos as per your example would be a start, but would like thumbnails which would enlarge on click or rollover.
Apologies...

It is a bit like MSWord, in that it is not really possible to easily place an image anywhere in the article. Image placement is usually done relative to some text, or alongside other images within a paragraph, like you would do in Word.
What kind of layouts are you looking to create?

Here is an example of a simple gallery created with the Image Manager Extended and JCE MediaBox. In this example (see the video link below) I will do the following:
https://cdn.joomlacontenteditor.net/tmp/97863-getting-off-the-ground-with-jce-editor-and-mediabox.mp4
- Toggle the Block Elements display, so I can see the outline of the paragraphs in the article.
- Set my curost in the desired part of the article, and create a new paragraph for the images by pressing the enter key.
- Open the Image Manager Extended and select 4 images for my gallery. I will assume you have already uploaded the images, if not, please see - https://www.joomlacontenteditor.net/blog/how-to/uploading-and-resizing-multiple-images
- Once the images are selected, I click the Insert Multiple Images button.
- Click on the Popups tab, and select JCE MediaBox from the Popup Type list
- If required, I can enter in a Title and Caption for each of the popups by clicking on the relevant pencil icon.
- In the Group field, I type in something to associate the images as a gallery, eg: nature
- Click on the Advanced tab, and paste the following into the Styles field - margin: 5px; display: inline-block;
- Click on the Image tab, and set a Height value of 120 and clear the Width field.
- Click Insert.
