Hello!

This is the second time I'm unable to update the component, even though my subscription is still running.

The new version is suggested by the Jommla Update system, but when I click on "update" this is what I get:

Failed to extract file: index.php_option_com_releases_task_update.download_file_pkg_jce_pro_2982.zip_key_xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

(the number of the key is hidden on purpose)

What is the issue?

Thanks!

Ryan

Something on your site or server is re-writing the download URL, as it should be index.php?option=com_releases&task=update.download&file_pkg_jce_pro_2982.zip&key=x

Perhaps it is an extension you have installed that is interferring with the file name via the onInstallerBeforePackageDownload event. I have seen another instanc eof this (I don't know if it was also you) and this was the only possible cause for this issue I could determine.

Please download and install JCE Pro manually - https://www.joomlacontenteditor.net/downloads/editor/pro/latest

Just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean everybody isn't out to get you.

Installing from the website was the only workaround I found last time (without asking via the forum or else I'm really forgetful😖).

Point is I have not installed any extension for a very long time now (I'd say 6 months at least), and the previous versions got installed smoothly...

Just to know... how do you know there's an extension rewriting the path? What should it be originally?

Thanks a lot!

Ryan

I've only seen 2 reports of this issue. If it was a bug in JCE or in Joomla installer then there would be many more.

Have you updated any other extensions? A change made in an update could be responsible.

The onInstallerBeforePackageDownload Joomla event provides a method for extensions to modify the install URL for their own extension, but it requires that a check is done that the event is referring to their extension. If this is not done, and the url is modified, it can affect any extension. This is the only explanation I can think of that is causing this.

Through the Joomla installer panel only.

I'm lost. I don't know what you mean. Are there any parameters which I should set to modify this?

No, I don't know what is causing the issue. It may be one of the extensions you updated recently. I'd be happy to take a look if you send me a login - https://www.joomlacontenteditor.net/contact/site-login

Hello!

After logging into my website, were you able to find out the possible origin of this error message? I saw that you updated the component, did you solve the issue or did you update the component by installing from the "outside" (downloading it and then installing it)?

Thanks for your answer!

Ryan

I was not able to solve the issue. Some others are also experiencing it, but it seems in their case to be limited to 2 hosting companies, and not all sites hosted with those companies. It is very strange, and has no, at the moment, identifiable cause.

I installed JCE Pro 2.9.82 on your site manually.

ok, thanks anyway! Hope this will not be the case for each update!

Is it possible for you to contact Strato support and ask if they have any particular restrictions or challenges in place for the following url?

Okay, I will

Hello

For me too, since the upgrade to joomla 4. Same problem on joomla 5.

Host OVH, php tested from 8.0 to 8.3. No known url restriction at the host.

The file is in the temporary folder, but it seems renamed: index.php_option_com_releases_task_update.download_file_pkg_jce_pro_2982.zip_key_mycode (and does not delete automatically of course)

the manual update works very well.

Have a nice day.

jeff73

hello,

A la little more explanation after exploring different sites:

the problem appears on sites upgraded from joomla 3 to 4 or 5.

There is no problem on sites made directly with joomla 4 or 5.

Could this come from a plugin that was incorrectly uninstalled during the upgrade process?

Ryan

I have been able to determine that this is caused by the Imunify Web Application Firewall that is activated on our hosting company. Unfortunataely I am unable to disable it, and bypassing it must be done per IP address or IP address ranges.

I will be moving the server to a new hosting company soon.

I have whitelisted some OVH IP addresses so you may be able to update now.

This is useful information thank you. Something related to this might be triggering the firewall. My own tests in Joomla 3 are also blocked.

I just tested the update on 3 sites updated from 3 to 4 or 5, and one site in 3: it works now. (OVH). (no more update to do...)
whitelisting some OVH IP addresses for me seems like the right solution.

Also important: no problems with host O2switch and joomla 4 and 5.

Thanks. Have a good day

Strato reported "everything  is correct."

BTW my V5 Joomla is not an upgrade. It is hosted on IP 81.169.145.161

Thank you for querying this with them. Unfortunately this is all on my side and the only real fix is to move hosting companies, so this will take a while to fix properly.

As long as it can be done manually...

Ryan

Yes there is no issue with the installation process itself, the issue lies with a "firewall" that out hosting company have installed on our servers, over which we have very little control. This firewall is blocking the request for the update package from some hosting companies, eg: Strato and OVH, for some unknown reason.

As we can't disable this firewall, we have no other option but to move to a new host, which we plan to do in the next 2 weeks.

I found out that The IP of my site is on one blacklist , maybe that is the reason:

I think you might be right. If you are on a shared server, the IP address might be blocked because of spam / bot activity by others hosted on the same server.
