In the «Article Text» section, using the button [Insert image] it is possible to upload and insert files with extension *.jpeg.
But when I open the «Images and Links» dialogue, I can neither upload nor insert files with extension *.jpeg. Only *.gif, *.jpg and *.png seem to be uploadable and insertable. How comes? I do not understand this strange behaviour.

As the Intro Image and Full Article Image fields are Joomla fields, the file types they support are set in the Joomla Media settings.
Go to Content -> Media and click on the Options button.
Check that jpeg is in the list of file types in the Allowed Extensions and Legal Image Extensions fields.
