doing maintenance on a client's site I discovered that in the Components menu there is an entry "jcemediabox" which leads nowhere. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the plugin but that menu is still there. What can I do?

Mediabox has never been a component, so I'm not sure why you have that entry.

Just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean everybody isn't out to get you.
Not sure how you would remove that without going into the DB. You can try using the Rebuild button in Menus -> All Menu Items.
