I need to embed a live stream in my site, and the client has supplied a link to a m3u8 file/stream. However, when I enter the URL to that stream, Media Manager won't save. The button doesn't work. So, I replace the .m3u8 extension with .mp4, click save, and then go into the code and change it back. How can I make it work with .m3u8? Thanks.
That would be okay if I could build in a fallback to HTML5, but I can't seem to do that either.
I don't think you can stream a live feed using the HTML 5 <video> tag.
m3u8 seems to require a special player.
Just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean everybody isn't out to get you.
No. I got it to work with <video> tags, but only on Mac and iOS. It won't work on PCs, which was why we defaulted to Flash. And yes, I know that won't work on iOS, which is why we have the "if the video doesn't work" link below the embed.
It is possible then that this might work for you - http://mediaelementjs.com/
I have created a Joomla Plugin for it - https://github.com/widgetfactory/wfmediaelement

Download this plugin (click on the Download Zip button)
Install it using the Joomla Extension Manager.
Enable the plugin.
When you insert a <video> tag, either using the Media Manager or adding it in the source code, Mediaelement will do its magic on it in the front-end, creating a cross-browser player.

Nonetheless, i would like to load the m3u8 stream through ice mediabox, but there's no such option in the media type field.
Set the Media Type to mp4 Video.
Please note that this will only work in Safari on MacOS and iOS devices. There is no fallback player for other browsers.
