However, you mentioned 'I'll start working on this soon for JCE Pro 2.9.84' ?...
Hoping to have a feature to manage the columns directly, rather than the 'Path' and separate 'Attributes' and 'Styles', which aren't ideal UI for users to navigate.

Yes, the current version is 2.9.82, the next update will be 2.9.83 which is in RC stage so no new features will be added.
I will start working on this atfer 2.9.83 has been released.
