Is there a method that when you switch to Code Tab that '<' and '>' are NOT being replaced to '< ;' and '> ;' ?

Is there a method that when you switch to Code Tab that '<' and '>' are NOT being replaced to '< ;' and '> ;' ?
< and > characters entered directly into the editor window (instead of the code tab) will always be encoded, otherwise they are treated as components of an HTML element, eg: <div>
