Columns do not work for me.
In my websites all content in the columns are always displayed below each other. Never next to each other, as it can be seen in the editor view though.

I have now found the error myself.
Before I installed JCE we had another editor in use with similar function. The CSS values were still there somewhere and written fix in the HTML code. Therefore the setting of JCE did not work.
Incorrect CSS values removed and it works!
