A recent spate of hacks on Joomla sites has been reported recently and there are some suggestions that an exploit in an earlier version of JCE may have been used to carry out these attacks on some sites.
We were notified of this vulnerability by Secunia in May of this year and promptly released two updates to fix the issues :
http://www.joomlacontenteditor.net/news/item/jce-21-released
http://www.joomlacontenteditor.net/news/item/jce-211-released
All subsequant releases have included these fixes and no new vulnerabilities have been reported to us.
We urge all users to update JCE to the latest version as soon as possible, especially if you are using JCE 1.5 or any version before JCE 2.1.1
It is advisable to ensure that your version of Joomla and ALL extensions are kept up to date.
Checking for Updates
JCE supports the Joomla! Update Manager in Joomla! 2.5 and Joomal! 3.0 so you will be notified of any new version via the Update Manager. In Joomla! 1.5, 2.5 and 3.0 an update notification is also shown in the JCE Control Panel.
All JCE Editor updates include a release notification published on this site and are tweeted. You can subscribe to the JCE News Feed, or follow us on twitter.
Updating JCE
Updates can be done via the Joomla! Update Manager in Joomla! 2.5 and Joomla! 3.0 or using the Updates button in the JCE Control Panel in all Joomla! versions. You can also update by installing the new version using the Joomla! Installer.
Installation and update instructions are available here
An extra helping hand
If you are managing multiple Joomla! sites you may consider services like Admincredible or Watchful.li which have features to update Joomla! and installed extensions on multiple sites. joomla-security.com's audit tool can help you find and remove hacked files and keep your site up to date.

After a beta and release candidate testing phase (a big thank you to all testers!), JCE 2.3.0 "Stable" has been released.
This release marks the end of the 2.2.x stream and the beginning of official support for Joomla! 3.0. JCE 2.3.0 is now available for Joomla! 1.5, 2.5 and 3.0 as a single installation package.
What's new?
Some of the new stuff has already been mentioned in a previous beta release announcement, but to reiterate :
Administration UI changes
The JCE Administration has been refined a little bit, mostly to make it easier to support 3 Joomla! versions - eg: system modal dialogs are now used instead of custom dialogs, custom table styles removed - but a few small changes, such as replacing Yes/No select lists with radio lists make setting some parameters easier (especially when using fingers on a tablet!)
Drag & Drop Profile Ordering
Like content items in the Joomla! 3.0 Article Manager, JCE Editor Profiles can now be re-ordered by dragging and dropping them into their new position. This works on mobile devices too! You can still re-order by using the Order Up and Order Down buttons or by entering in the new order values as before.
Assign Profiles to Devices
A new "Device" option has been added to the Profiles Setup tab which allows you to specify the device - Desktop, Tablet, Phone - the profile is to be used on.
"Mobile" Toolbar Theme
An experimental "Mobile" Toolbar Theme has been added with bigger buttons. Of course this theme can be used on any device. This theme will be improved and refined as more tests are done on mobile devices.
In addition a sample "Mobile" profile has been included as an example of how one could use the Device assignment and Mobile toolbar theme.
Language Loading
All JCE language strings are now loaded via INI files, reducing the number of files loaded by the editor on startup and simplifying translation. We are in the process of setting up an official Transifex project for JCE (thanks to jonnydement).
What's not included?
We had previously mentioned converting all JCE Add-ons to Joomla! plugins, installed with the Joomla! Installer.
Initial work on this quickly produced a number of backwards compatibility issues that would have made the upgrade to JCE 2.3.0 difficult for many users, and the lack of some required features in Joomla! 1.5 would have still required JCE Add-ons to be installed with the JCE Installer.
This conversion has therefore been moved to JCE 3.0, where support for Joomla! 1.5 will be dropped.

This update fixes a few issues, adds support for Joomla! 3.0 (by removing use of the DS constant) and adds a Menu Assignment option - selecting a menu or multiple menu items in the MediaBox parameters will restrict mediabox to load only on pages assigned to those menu items.
Check out the Changelog for a full list of bug fixes and updates.

This release fixes a few bugs and adds a few missing features, including :
Drag & Drop Upload support
Already included in the standard Image Manager, this now been included in the Image Manager Extended, with the added bonus of being able to resize the images on upload too!
"Always Include Dimensions"
Again, another option already available in the standard Image Manager, setting this parameter to "No" will allow images to be inserted without dimensions if they have not been changed from the original values.
Default Attribute Values
And the last feature also available in the Image Manager, these parameters allow setting of default values for some attributes like Classes, Styles, Directionality, ID and Long Description.
New Image Library
A new image library has been added - with support for PHP GD2 and PHP IMagick - for resizing and cropping images. As HTML5 Canvas has been shown to produce poor quality thumbnails and resized images due to a lack of any form of image interpolation, this library is used by default for all these operations. An option is available however to revert to HTML5 Canvas.
Coming soon to Image Manager Extended 2.1
Image watermarks and popup "albums"...
